Georgia football accomplished a lot during their 35-10 win over Texas on Saturday. Not only did they stay in the hunt to make it to Atlanta to play for an SEC Championship, but Georgia essentially clinched their spot in the College Football Playoff as well.
So while Georgia waits to see if the cards fall their way in the SEC, the Bulldogs can pay close attention to the CFP rankings to see what their future journey in the playoff could look like this season.
The CFP committee had Georgia at No. 5 in this week's rankings, but after Alabama's loss to Oklahoma they should expect to move up one spot. But Georgia's dominant win over Texas gave the committee an opportunity to do something that has likely rarely been done before.
Georgia's big win gave the committee a difficult decision
The three other teams ranked above Georgia are Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M. All three teams are still undefeated and won on Saturday, so usually that means they will remain above Georgia. But the Aggies may not deserve to stay above Georgia.
Ohio State and Indiana cruised to big wins on Saturday, so there is no argument for Georgia to jump them. But Texas A&M beat a 3-7 South Carolina team by one point after trailing by 27 points at halftime. While that is a remarkable comeback, the Aggies do not deserve credit for beating as bad of a team as South Carolina is by one point. In fact, Texas A&M should be punished and ranked below Georgia in the CFP rankings.
Not only was this win not impressive, but Texas A&M has played a historically easy schedule in the SEC this season. All seven of their conference games so far this season have come against teams in the bottom half of the SEC standings. Georgia on the other hand played four of the best teams in the conference this year.
The committee more than likely will keep Texas A&M above Georgia in their rankings on Tuesday, but Georgia made that decision a lot more difficult than it could have been because of their dominant win over Texas.
