Georgia football took down Alabama in historic fashion as they beat the Crimson Tide 28-7 in the SEC Championship game. Sure this game itself was a pretty typical conference championship game, but there was a lot more at stake than people may have originally realized.
Earlier this season Alabama beat Georgia in Athens which ended the Bulldogs 33 game home win streak. Georgia not only needed revenge on Saturday to avenge that loss, but they also needed to win to end a historic Alabama streak in the SEC Championship game.
Georgia ends historic Alabama streak in dominant fashion
Alabama is the most successful program in the history of the SEC. Georgia may be the kings of the SEC right now, but all time that title still belongs to Alabama.
The SEC Championship game has been played since 1992, and Alabama has the most victories out of the entire conference with 11. That fact is impressive enough, but heading into Saturday's matchup they had actually won the last nine times they have played in the SEC Championship game.
Georgia however was not going to let that streak continue as they prevented Alabama from making it 10 straight victories in this game. On top of that, Georgia handed Alabama their first loss in program history in Mercedes-Benz Stadium as well.

The best part of this win is the fact that Georgia won their second straight SEC Championship and third in the last four years. This victory also cemented their place as the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff this season as well. But after Alabama ended Georgia's home win streak earlier this season it is nice that they were able to ruin an Alabama streak as well.
And who knows, maybe this is a streak that Georgia will be able to challenge as their reign on the SEC doesn't look like it will be ending anytime soon.
