Georgia's latest transfer portal loss is one that is not a surprise, but still stings

If this is not the straw that broke the camel's back for Mike White, what else will happen to Georgia?

The transfer portal is the place to be, apparently. With Michigan defeating UConn to win the national championship on Monday night, the transfer portal is now wide open in college basketball. So far the Georgia Bulldogs have five players officially in the portal now in Dylan James, Jeremiah Wilkinson, Somto Cyril, Jackson McVey, and Jordan Ross. A sixth one is expected to be happening here soon...

Do not be surprised if Jake Wilkins makes it half-a-dozen former Georgia players heading elsewhere.

If that last name sounds familar, that is because it should. Jake Wilkins is the son of Georgia and Atlanta Hawks legend in Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins. Like his famous father, Wilkins could really get above the rim. Truth be told, he played sparingly last year under Mike White. The fact White did not hone in on Wilkins' inherent athleticism on the defensive floor makes this even worse...

Marcus Millender and Kareem Stagg may be back, but this offseason has been a disaster for Georgia.

Jake Wilkins hitting the transfer portal is more horrible news for Georgia

There are a few things at play here that really makes this one sting. The first is Domonique Wilkins has long been a goodwill ambassador to all things hoops in the state of Georgia. While his older son played at Virginia, it stinks to see Jake leave Athens after last season. Another is maybe he did not mesh with White all that well. The third is there are plenty of minutes to be had in next year's rotation.

For a program that seems to be at a bit of a crossroads, Dawg Nation is trying desperately to figure out what is going on. This team is good enough to win 20-plus games annually and regularly make the NCAA Tournament now. Not to say this team is good enough to beat anyone, or lose to anyone, the sheer amount of variance this team plays with under White has been an ongoing ice cream headache.

In the end, players come and go because we live in the wonderful world of NIL that is defined by the transfer portal. While more and more players are choosing to stay in school for longer, which is a good thing, the day and age of players sticking with one program for the duration of their college careers seems to be something very much in the past. The future is now, so we have to embrace it.

For now, it will be interesting to see what team ends up signing Wilkins out of the portal for next year.
