Georgia loses edge rusher Elo Modozie to Big Ten bottom-feeder in the transfer portal

The optics of losing a player to the portal at a position group of need does not land well for UGA.

It took a minute, but Elo Modozie has finally committed to his new college football team. The former Georgia Bulldogs edge rusher has decided to take his talents to the Big Ten to play for Barry Odom at Purdue. Although Odom is a fantastic defensive mind, Purdue is arguably the worst program in the Big Ten. Odom was hired away from UNLV to fix that. Frankly, could Georgia have needed Modozie more?

On3's Hayes Fawcett shared over social media Modozie has had 7.5 career sacks over three seasons.

While the former Army transfer could have had staying power at Georgia, the Jacksonville native is on his way to West Lafayette to presumably close out his college career with the Boilermakers. Although Purdue should be better than they were a year ago, this is still probably not a bowl team. At Georgia, Modozie could have been part of another playoff team. Too bad Glenn Schumann is still calling plays.

This transfer maybe signifies a bigger issue at hand when it comes to the state of Kirby Smart's staff.

While Georgia still remains quite strong at its very ethos, we are totally seeing the lingering results of coaching attrition in real time. It has been years since Dan Lanning and Todd Monken last coached in Athens. Their replacements in Schumann on defense and Mike Bobo on the offensive side of the ball have only been good, not great... Schumann's defense in particular is why UGA is not playing tonight.

The biggest issue plaguing Georgia all season was its inability to generate pressure. Maybe Modozie was an untapped solution, or actually part of the problem? Either way, he is out the door to Purdue. To put it as simply as one can, if you cannot get after the passer, the opposition will always stay in games for as long as you cannot possess the ball. Schumann's defense let Ole Miss back in the Sugar Bowl.

Right now, Georgia needs to find it within itself to manufacture a competent pass rush in 2026. Yes, last year's team was well-coached. It was also quite green. So there is some growing belief that Georgia could mature and blossom in real time well before this time next year. As for Modozie, he is probably going to get the playing time he wants, as he aims to get Purdue to something around .500.

If Georgia cannot generate a pass rush in back-to-back years, then Schumann needs to take a hike!
