The race to make it to the SEC Championship game is quite simple right now. Georgia and Kentucky are the only two teams with one loss in the conference as of now, so if either team wins out they are guaranteed to make it to Atlanta.
Things could get extremely interesting though if either team were to lose, and there's a decent chance that both Georgia and Kentucky lose this weekend which would create a six-way tie for first place in the SEC.
Georgia, Kentucky could create a six-way tie atop the SEC
Right now there are six teams tied in the SEC standings with two losses. Those teams are LSU, Alabama, Texas, Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee. LSU and Alabama play each other this weekend as do Texas and Missouri, so two of these teams are guaranteed to add a third loss.
That leaves Ole Miss who plays Georgia this weekend and Tennessee who plays Kentucky. If either of them lose they would add a third loss as well and see their chances of making the SEC Championship game essentially vanish. If they win though then they would stay alive in the race to make it to Atlanta.
Both Georgia and Kentucky are the road teams this weekend. Georgia is a small 3.5 point favorite over Ole Miss right now while Tennessee is favored by 6.5 against Kentucky, so it isn't out of the realm of possibilities that both Georgia and Kentucky lose. If that occurs then there will be six teams tied atop the SEC with two losses, and at that point it's anyone's guess who would end up making it to Atlanta.
SEC tiebreakers that may come into play later this season.
There are still three weeks of football to be played after this weekend's games. Some teams like Kentucky and Georgia play a non-conference game as their season finale, but each team would still have at least two conference games left after this weekend. Those three weeks worth of games would obviously have a massive impact on who makes it to the SEC Championship game, but if there's a six-way tie with three weeks to go the SEC tiebreakers would likely determine who makes it to Atlanta.
The first tiebreaker is head-to-head results. This tiebreaker basically only applies if two teams are tied for one spot, but after this first tiebreaker things get interesting.
The second tiebreaker is their record against common opponents. This tiebreaker, depending on the amount of teams that are tied, would likely settle who goes to Atlanta. For example, if there's a three-way tie and those three teams all played the same four SEC teams then whoever has the best record against those four teams would get to play in the SEC Championship game.
After this there are three other obscure tiebreakers that could come into play before it would come down to a random draw as the final decider.
All of these tiebreakers only matter if Georgia or Kentucky lose a game the rest of the season. Georgia still has to play at Ole Miss, Missouri and at South Carolina and they will be favored in all three games, but all three of those teams could beat them. Kentucky on the other hand has a much tougher finish as they head to Tennessee this week followed by another road game at Texas A&M and then LSU at home.
The SEC race could get wild based on how this week goes, but it also could be extremely simple if Georgia and Kentucky just keep winning.
