Georgia football is still feeling the pain after their 24-21 loss to Alabama last week. The Bulldogs have an opportunity to get their season back on track on Saturday as they welcome Kentucky to Athens for their third SEC game of the season.
But after the early season loss to Alabama, it's hard to not pay attention to the Crimson Tide going forward. And in most cases Georgia fans would love nothing more than to see Alabama lose to Vanderbilt this week.
That however is not what Georgia needs. The Bulldogs actually need Alabama to be the Alabama of old and handle their business against Vanderbilt at home this week to help their College Football Playoff resume.
An Alabama win is the best case scenario for Georgia
There is a good argument for Georgia to want Alabama to lose. The Crimson Tide not only have a one game lead in the SEC standings, but they also have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Georgia as well. So the Bulldogs need Alabama to lose twice before they would pass them in the race to Atlanta.
But that isn't the most important thing right now because Georgia still controls their destiny to make it to the SEC Championship game. If UGA wins their final six SEC games they will make it to Atlanta, so they don't need any outside help right now.
Georgia however does need some help when it comes to their College Football Playoff resume. The first CFP rankings don't come out until November, but the Bulldogs don't have a strong resume right now. And an Alabama loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday would tarnish their resume even more.
So the last thing Georgia needs is another loss to Vanderbilt like Alabama suffered in 2024. Georgia needs Alabama to be the best version of themselves and come away with a dominant victory against the Commodores, that way their loss to the Crimson Tide doesn't hold them back when the College Football Playoff rankings are released next month.
