The officials didn’t help, but Georgia was still able to defeat the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.

Georgia has done it. The Bulldogs have knocked off the top ranked Texas Longhorns on the road by a final score of 30-15. Everyone, and I mean everyone, doubted this Georgia team going into this game, but Georgia did what Georgia does best and won the game anyways.

This game however was uniquely challenging in so many ways.

Everyone expects it to be a dog fight whenever you play the No. 1 team in the country, especially on the road. But that’s not how the game began.

Georgia had their patented slow start on offense before completely taking the game over on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs entered the locker room at halftime with a 23-0 lead, something even the most confident Georgia fans never saw coming.

But then Texas made their comeback. The Longhorns brought in true freshman QB Arch Manning late in the first half and he breathed life into this Texas team and their fans. And speaking of the Longhorns’ fans, this is where the game became uniquely challenging.

Wild scenes at Texas Memorial Stadium

After a defensive pass interference penalty on Texas overturned a Carson Beck interception in the third quarter, madness ensued. The Texas fans grew livid. So much so that they began throwing trash onto the field.

During the delay, the officials got together and ended up picking up the pass interference flag, which means Beck’s interception would stand. How that makes any sense I don’t know, but Texas was able to cut Georgia’s lead to 23-15 a couple plays later.

Georgia never folded

This is where most teams would fall apart, but not a team like Georgia.

The very next drive Georgia went 89 yards in 11 plays and extended their lead to 30-15 after Trevor Etienne’s third rushing touchdown.

Texas didn’t give up, but the lead was too great even for the No. 1 Longhorns. And with the Georgia defense continuing to play lights out, the Bulldogs held on to win 30-15.

I doubt we’ll ever see a game like this one for quite some time, but this win proves without a doubt that Georgia is a national championship contender. I’d say the same thing under normal circumstances after beating the top ranked team on the road, but the added road bump from the officials makes this win that much more impressive.

So the college football world better watch out, because Georgia football isn’t going anywhere.
