The biggest game of week two in college football by far is Ohio State at Texas. This is a top five matchup that the entire country will be tuning in for, but Georgia fans may face a dilemma when trying to decide who they want to win.
On one hand it’d be nice for Texas to win to give the SEC an advantage over the Big Ten this season, but watching Texas lose has become a fun pastime since the Longhorns joined the conference two years ago.
Texas beating Ohio State props the SEC up
All offseason the debate between which conference is best has run rampant. The Big Ten thinks they’re finally the best in college football because they’ve won the national championship three years in a row, but the SEC still has more success over the past few decades and are statistically a much deeper conference. Texas vs Ohio State is the first matchup this year between the two conferences and it puts two of the best teams each conference has to offer against each other, so conference bragging rights are on the line.
Texas winning can be seen as a good thing for Georgia. The result of this game has no impact on the SEC Championship race even if Texas loses, so for Georgia it may not be a bad thing to see the SEC gain an edge on the Big Ten if Texas wins.
If Georgia were to go on to win the SEC that could help their argument come playoff time to be seeded higher. If their resume as the SEC Champion is comparable to the Big Ten Champion then this game could swing things in their favor to be seeded higher since the SEC could argue they were the tougher conference this season.
Seeding ultimately may not matter that much, but it’s mot a bad thing to be able to say Georgia won the more difficult conference if they hoist the SEC Championship trophy in Atlanta again this year.
Texas losing would continue their trend of being unable to get over the hump
Georgia ultimately controls their own fate. They don’t need any help from anyone else to accomplish their goal of winning the SEC and winning a national title, so a Georgia fan could argue that SEC dominance over the Big Ten is irrelevant.
If that’s true then it could be fun seeing a new conference rival like Texas continue to fall short on the big stage.
Texas joined the SEC two years ago and they already are 0-3 against Georgia. This includes a loss at home as the No. 1 team in the country, a loss at Georgia last season and a loss in the 2024 SEC Championship game. Texas also failed to make the SEC Championship game and College Football Playoff last year as the preseason No. 1 team in the country, so while they’ve had a good team each year they’ve been in the SEC they’ve never met their expectations.
Since Georgia has had the upper hand in the SEC the last two years it’s been fun to watch Texas struggle since joining the league. While Texas losing to Ohio State wouldn’t hurt their chances to win the SEC it could impact their chances at making the playoff, and another “failure” this season would be fun to witness.
At the end of the day some Georgia fans will say the outcome of this game is irrelevant. While that may be true, the fans who want to find a rooting interest may struggle to pick which team they’d prefer to win.
