The Georgia Bulldogs have extended their dominance from football to baseball as of late. This past weekend, Georgia secured their first trip to the College World Series in 18 years.
While the baseball team is somewhat new to this level of success, the football team has won two straight SEC Championships and have two recent national titles in Kirby Smart's tenure as well. Now, the two teams can say they have one thing in common, playing the Texas Longhorns with massive stakes on the line.
Georgia baseball will play Texas who fans are more than used to facing
After closing out their Super Regional series against Mississippi State, Georgia will now play Texas in the opening round of the College World Series. This comes after Texas had a dominant sweep over No. 11 Oregon in the Austin Super Regional.
What makes this matchup so amusing for Georgia fans is the fact of how Georgia playing Texas has become a growing theme in the college football landscape. It started in 2024 when Texas played host to Georgia in Austin. After a tight game that ended in a Georgia win, the two would later face off again in the SEC Championship.
In the championship game that featured Gunner Stockton coming in at halftime and an overtime thrill, Georgia would once again conquer the Longhorns.
While 2025's matchup was not nearly as interesting, the hype was there when the game started as the stakes for the College Football Playoof loomed large. Georgia needed the win to lock in a spot for the SEC Championship while Texas was looking to push for a playoff spot. Even though Georgia won by double digits, the feel surrounding that game was electric.
Now the two programs will transfer that electricity to the baseball fields of Omaha.
These two programs are very similar in the way they have dominated as of recent, with Georgia winning this season's SEC regular season title while Texas took claim to the title in the previous season. While these two have controlled the SEC, the conference has still proven to be one of the toughest in college athletics.
Outside of this matchup, Alabama and Oklahoma also clinched a spot in the CWS as well. All four teams will be in the same half of the bracket as Georgia and Texas, so if the Bulldogs are going to advance to the National Championship series they will have to get past three elite SEC teams.
