Georgia's kryptonite on defense has become quite clear
Georgia football has officially moved into position to make the College Football Playoff this season after moving up to No. 6 in the latest edition of the committee's rankings. However, with two games remaining there is still a lot of work to do.
A lot of good things happened for Georgia during their blowout win over UMass this last weekend, but the defense was not one of those things. Georgia's defense did not look ready to play, and a 2-win UMass team was able to hang with the Bulldogs for most of the first half. UMass was even able to rush for 226 yards, which is the most Georgia has given up in a game since 2018.
While Georgia's defense could have done a lot of things better against UMass, one struggle has creeped up on UGA again that is a cause for concern that might just be this unit's kryptonite.
Physical, mobile QBs
UMass did something on offense that Georgia has struggled with earlier this season as well. Georgia's defense tends to have issues whenever a team has a mobile QB who is vey physical with how they run. Early in the game against UMass this was an issue, and UGA also struggled with this against Florida this year as well.
When Kirby Smart and Georgia beat Florida about a month ago, the Gators actually looked like the better team early on. Then their starting quarterback DJ Lagway got hurt and the Gators' offense never looked the same again. But those struggles against Lagway were very noticeable, so much so that Florida fans think they would have won had Lagway not been hurt.
We'll never know if they would have won or not, but it was still very clear how much Georgia struggled defending his physical style of play and how mobile he was.
This has become a serious problem for Georgia now that these issues have happened in multiple games now, especially against a team like UMass. Hopefully Georgia won't face a mobile and physical QB the rest of the season, but if they do then Georgia's defense is going to have a difficult task in front of them.
