Heading into Georgia's game against Auburn the Bulldogs had won 53 games in a row against unranked opponents. This was the longest active streak in the country and since UGA was favored by nearly three touchdowns at home it seemed unlikely that this streak would end this weekend.
Auburn however did the unthinkable and beat Georgia as an unranked team to snap the Bulldogs' impressive run against unranked teams.
The last time Georgia had lost to an unranked team was their double overtime loss to South Carolina in 2019. That puts into perspective just how long it took them to build up this win streak, but all it took was one win from Auburn to end Georgia's remarkable win streak.
Georgia wasn't even close to breaking the all time record
Alabama holds the all time record for consecutive wins against unranked opponents. This set this record over 14 years during Nick Saban's tenure from 2007 to 2021 that ended with 100 straight wins over unranked opponents.
Georgia's 53-game win streak was impressive, but it still wasn't even close to Alabama's record. The Bulldogs likely would've had to go another six years to come close to Alabama's record, but now they have to start over and beat every unranked team they play for the next decade to even get close to Alabama's record.
There are only two teams currently unranked on Georgia's schedule, and once postseason play begins it's unlikely they'll play an unranked team. This record however doesn't seem that important now that Auburn ended it, but maybe in the late 2030s Georgia will approach this record and we can start talking about it again.
First loss to rival since 2020
Georgia's loss to Auburn also marked their first defeat to a rival since 2020. The last time Georgia lost to a rival was in 2020 when Florida beat them 44-28. Since then Georgia has beat all three of their main rivals (Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech) every game as well as Tennessee who has felt like a secondary rival over the past few years.
It was only a matter of time until this streak was snapped too. It is a bit surprising that it happened to an unranked rival though because Georgia has beat their rivals countless times when they are ranked. Auburn however was able to end Georgia's impressive win streak against their rivals and unranked opponents this past weekend though.
Georgia has a chance to start a new streak against their rivals in two weeks when they play Florida in Atlanta. The Gators have two impressive wins so far this season against Ole Miss and Texas, but they also have two ugly losses to Missouri and South Carolina as well. Who knows which Florida team will show up in two weeks, but Georgia will have to be prepared for another tough battle against the Gators.
Kickoff between Florida and Georgia is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 pm EST. This game will be played in Atlanta due to their normal venue in Jacksonville being under renovations.
