Georgia's offensive identity needs a quick trip back in time

What does a typical Georgia football offense look like? The past few seasons the Bulldogs have gotten a little aggressive in the passing game, and while Georgia has still won a lot of games the offense hasn't operated as efficiently as most UGA fans want.

The elite Georgia offenses of the past all began with a solid run game. These offenses have been able to hand the ball off and pick up chunks of yards on the ground at will. This not only wears the opposing defenses down, but it also sets up the passing game especially when it comes to play action.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo spoke with the media a few weeks ago, and he emphasized how he wants to get back running the ball a lot more as well.

"But I think your identity, everything starts with the run game," Bobo shared via 247sports.com. "At any level, you've got to be able to run the ball and stop the run. And that's been an emphasis of ours since we got back from the Sugar Bowl."

Georgia's success hinges on an improved run game

Georgia's run game was not very strong last season. They don't deserve all of the blame because both the running back and offensive line rooms were decimated with injuries. So getting in any sort of rhythm running the ball is tough to do when new players are getting injured every week.

But the Bulldogs get a fresh start this season and thankfully UGA hasn't suffered any significant injuries so far during fall camp. Georgia's running back room also has as much depth as they've ever had before. Nate Frazier will be the starter who receives a bulk of the carries, but Illinois transfer Josh McCray will be ready to make a big impact as well. Roderick Robinson is healthy once again and freshman Chauncey Bowens has been impressive so far this offseason as well.

Georgia opens their 2025 season against Marshal next Saturday, so it will be interesting to see if Bobo adjusts how he runs UGA's offense to feature the run game more like they did a few years ago.
