One of Georgia's biggest goals entering this season was to win the SEC for the third year in a row. This would make them one of three programs to win the SEC three times in a row since the SEC Championship game was introduced, and their quest to accomplish that was made much easier thanks to their win over Alabama this weekend.
Not only did Georgia ascend to No. 1 in the AP Poll after beating Alabama, but they are in a prime position to make it to Atlanta to play for a conference title. In fact, after looking at the conference as a whole and Georgia's upcoming schedule it would be a bit surprising if they weren't playing for an SEC Championship this season.
The rest of Georgia's schedule is rather easy
Georgia still has five conference games left this season, and their schedule is much easier than what other teams will have to face. Two of these games should be relatively easy wins which includes their rivalry matchup this weekend against Auburn and their SEC finale at South Carolina.
Georgia also plays Florida in a couple weeks who two weeks ago looked like a serious threat, but they've since dropped two games in a row and aren't even ranked anymore. This game will still be more challenging than the other two already mentioned, but it won't be as difficult as we all once thought.
Then there is a two game stretch where Georgia will actually be challenged. After they play Florida the Bulldogs will travel to No. 9 Ole Miss before hosting No. 13 Missouri at home. This is the most likely spot where Georgia could drop a game, but the good news for them is that they can afford a loss at this point and still have a great chance to make it to Atlanta.
Georgia's the last remaining undefeated team in the SEC
At the halfway point in the season Georgia is still the last unbeaten team left standing in the SEC. This gives them a clear advantage over everyone else because they can afford to lose one game and still have a clear path to make it to the SEC Championship game.
As of now there are still eight teams in the SEC with only one conference loss. They all in theory have a chance to make it to Atlanta right now too, but over time they will start beating each other. This week alone there are two matchups featuring two one loss teams as Alabama travels to Tennessee and Missouri travels to Ole Miss, so at the very least there will only be six one loss teams left after this week but there's a chance upsets could occur which would make that number decrease even more.
Georgia has the tiebreaker over their biggest competitor
At this point in the season it seems clear that Georgia and Alabama are the two best teams in the SEC. Both teams still have a lot of work to do if they're going to make it to Atlanta, but for now it wouldn't be surprising if they both make it there.
If Alabama is Georgia's biggest competition in the SEC then UGA has a huge advantage over them because they have the head-to-head tiebreaker to qualify for the SEC Championship game. So if Alabama and Georgia end up with the same record in the SEC it would be Georgia who gets the nod over them.
Georgia's win over Alabama means they don't have to worry about anyone else. As long as they keep winning then it's impossible for them to not make it to the SEC Championship game, so while every other team needs some outside help Georgia is sitting pretty and can just focus on themselves.
