Georgia football is firing on all cylinders at the perfect time. The Bulldogs are entering the College Football Playoff as one of the favorites to win it all, and that is thanks to their dominance on both sides of the ball.
However, it is Georgia's defense that has been the biggest reason why they are clicking at the right time. Georgia's offense more or less has been playing extremely well all season, but it was their defense that struggled a lot at the start of the season. That however is no longer the case, and it is Georgia's run defense that is asserting their dominance and carrying this group into the playoff.
Georgia's defense is looking like a typical Kirby Smart led group
A dominant run defense has become the norm at Georgia under Kirby Smart. That is why the struggles Georgia's defense faced at the start of the season were so jarring, but this group has really turned a corner over the last four games.
Georgia has only given up 128 total yards on the ground in their last four games. This includes holding Alabama to negative three yards on the ground in the SEC Championship game.
Only giving up 32 yards per game is about as good as it can possibly get on the defensive side of the ball, and this dominance is what has led to this unit looking more like the two Georgia teams that won a National Championship.
In 2021 Georgia's defense held their opponents to 84 yards per game in their final four games of the season before the playoff. In 2022 that number improved to about 56 yards given up on the ground per game.
So it is clear that this Georgia defense is looking a lot more like those two National Championship defenses did. In fact they have been even better in their final four games, and if they can continue this dominance then Georgia will have a great chance to bring home their third national title in five years.
