Georgia has been the betting favorite to win the SEC ever since SEC Media Days back at the end of July. As it stands on Aug. 27, the Bulldogs have +280 odds to win the SEC on FanDuel Sportsbook which is a slight improvement from where they were just one month ago.
Not far behind Georgia is Texas with +320 odds. Georgia and Texas are essentially neck-and-neck, but with the season beginning in one week it looks like the Bulldogs will begin the 2026 campaign as the betting favorite to win the SEC.
Georgia’s odds to win the SEC improved one week before season opener
Throughout the early months of the offseason it was the Texas Longhorns getting all of the hype to win the SEC. Not only were a majority of analysts picking the Longhorns, but Vegas was in favor of Texas as well. Then SEC Media Days happened where the media that were present voted Georgia as the preseason favorite to win the league, and Vegas quickly adjusted their odds in response.
After Media Days Georgia had +290 odds to win the SEC. Now on Aug. 27 they have slightly improved to +280. This small change doesn't mean a lot, but it shows that enough college football bettors are putting their money on Georgia to win the SEC to warrant another odds change.
It's unlikely that Kirby Smart or anyone on the team cares about this, and nor should they. Texas was the preseason betting favorite each of the last two years, but it was Georgia who came out on top in the conference. Georgia will hope to reverse that trend this season as they look to win the SEC for the third year in a row.
Georgia’s most likely SEC Championship game opponent may already be known
Georgia and Texas having the best odds to win the SEC show that Vegas thinks Texas will be Georgia's opponent in the SEC Championship game if they make it there themselves. That sentiment is cemented even further after seeing how far back the rest of the league is from these two teams.
Oklahoma has the third-best odds to win the SEC at+850. Then there is Alabama and LSU tied at +900 followed by Ole Miss at +1,000 and Texas A&M at +1,100. After that there is another significant drop off before finding Tennessee and Florida next.
These odds show that Vegas is fairly confident Georgia and Texas will meet in the SEC Championship game this season. Since they don't play each other during the regular season there is a decent chance this actually happens, but in reality it is not that simple.
Both Georgia and Texas have to first survive grueling regular season schedules that feature multiple games that could realistically end in a loss. Vegas however thinks they both will get past these potential upsets and meet in Atlanta in a rematch of the 2024 SEC Championship game.
Texas has a great roster this season, but the Bulldogs are 3-0 against them since they joined the league, so maybe facing Texas is exactly what Georgia should hope for.
