Georgia football capped off an 11-1 regular season Friday night after taking down in-state rival Georgia Tech 16-9. Immediately after that win everyone turned their attention to the SEC showdown between Texas and Texas A&M to see if Georgia could clinch their spot in the SEC Championship game.
Thankfully Arch Manning and the Longhorns were able to take down the Aggies which secured Georgia's spot in the SEC Championship game. The only thing missing was who the Bulldogs opponent would be as Alabama and Ole Miss both had a chance to earn their way to Atlanta as well.
Alabama had control of their fate as all they needed was a win at Auburn Saturday night to secure their spot in the championship game, but if they lost then Ole Miss would get the nod in their place. Auburn put up a good fight in front of an intimidating home environment, but the Crimson Tide were able to emerge with a 27-20 victory to create a battle of SEC giants in the championship game.
Alabama is the exact opponent Georgia wanted in the SEC Championship game
Georgia and Alabama already played once this season, and the Crimson Tide came to Athens and beat UGA 24-21. But for all the bad that occurred that game, Georgia's defense held Alabama scoreless in the second half, so they will be able to build off of that momentum this week.
But facing Alabama is a very scary thing for Georgia. No one needs to be reminded how dominant the Crimson Tide have been against Georgia as they have won nine of the last 10 meetings. Kirby Smart has accomplished everything a head coach can in college, but his 1-7 record against Alabama is the one negative that stands out on his resume.
Sure playing the Crimson Tide is a bit scary, but they are the exact team Georgia should want to face as this gives them another chance to prove that they can in fact beat this Alabama team.
Kickoff between Georgia and Alabama is scheduled for 4:00 pm EST on Saturday, Dec. 6 in Atlanta.
