In just a handful of days Georgia will begin their run at the College World Seires. Their first game in Omaha will see them take on the No. 6 overall seed Texas Longhorns who is the highest seeded team Georgia could’ve possibly played at this point.
Looking elsewhere in the CWS bracket Georgia will see matchups featuring two teams that on paper are much worse than Texas. That doesn’t seem totally fair considering Georgia is the highest seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament, so it may be time for the NCAA to consider a rule change where teams would be re-seeded after every round.
Georgia is the perfect example for why re-seeding the College World Series must occur
Right now the NCAA Tournament doesn’t do any re-seeding after any round. This means that some teams will benefit from upsets happening in their section of the bracket while others will have to play the best seeded teams possible.
Georgia is one of the teams that hasn’t had any luck when it comes to upsets. After going 3-0 in the Athens Regional they had to play the No. 14 overall seed Mississippi State in the Super Regional which was the highest seed possible for them to play. Elsewhere though there was a Super Regional featuring Little Rock and Troy who were both four-seeds in their regional.
If the NCAA re-seeded teams then Georgia would’ve played one of them instead since they were the highest seed left in the tournament. Instead they were left to play Mississippi State who had some of the best odds to win the National Championship.
This unfortunately is happening to Georgia again as they will play the No. 6 overall seed Texas in their first game of the College World Series. The Longhorns have the third-best odds to win it all right now, so how is it fair that Georgia has to play them as the best seed remaining? How is that fair especially when you consider that Alabama and Oklahoma, who have the sixth and seventh-best odds, get to play each other first in the same four-team bracket as Georgia and Texas?
Re-seeding is the best option for the NCAA to continue to reward the teams who had the best seasons instead of punishing them for not being lucky.
Why re-seeding the College World Series is a bad idea
It is easy to sit here as a Georgia fan and say the NCAA needs to re-seed the tournament after every round because it would benefit UGA this year, but there is a good reason why re-seeding shouldn’t happen.
Cinderella stories are what make sports fun. Little Rock and Troy playing each other in the Super Regional is so exciting because it is so different. That Super Regional specifically allowed a small school to advance to the College World Series, and if teams were re-seeded they both likely would’ve failed to make the College World Series.
The NCAA has a decision to make. Do they want to reward teams like Georgia who had the best regular seasons by giving them the easiest path possible? Or do they want to reward the underdogs who pull off crazy upsets by giving them a better chance to continue advancing?
Since Georgia will never be in the same position as Little Rock or Troy it’s easy to say re-seeding should occur, but there’s a good argument for setting the bracket at the start of the tournament and just letting it play out.
