Thursday got off to a rough start for Georgia after four-star quarterback Peter Bourque committed to Virginia Tech over the Bulldogs. That however was somehow not the only bad thing to happen to the program on Thursday.
News broke Thursday afternoon after that Georgia transfer defensive back Ja'Marley Riddle was arrested on May 8 during yet another traffic incident, which continues to be something happening far too often in the program.

Ja'Marley Riddle is the latest Georgia Bulldog to be arrested from a driving related incident
According to the above report, Riddle was pulled over for weaving in-and-out of traffic traveling over 90 miles per hour. During the officer's traffic stop he noticed that Riddle was acting nervous, so he asked him to step out of the car to finish the traffic stop. It was at this time that the officer believed he smelled marijuana, and upon searching Riddle's vehicle he found a bag of marijuana.
Riddle was arrested and is facing two drug related charges along with a misdemeanor speeding charge.
This incident is one of many that Georgia has faced over the past few years. Since the start of 2023 the Bulldogs have had over 30 run-ins with the law with many of them related to driving that led to arrests.
Most recently was former wide receiver Zachariah Branch who was arrested after G-Day the weekend before the NFL Draft. Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were also both arrested back in February and faced reckless driving charges.
Many of these arrests really weren't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Sure 30 incidents is a lot, but a vast majority were from speeding that many fans argue would only lead to arrests in Athens. There have been a few more serious incidents though, and Riddle could fall into that category since his involves drugs.
How Ja'Marley Riddle's arrest will impact Georgia's 2026 season
Riddle transferred to Georgia this offseason with hopes of being able to make it at a Power Four school. He played the last two years at East Carolina where he recorded 133 tackles, six interceptions and one touchdown.
That level of production is something that Georgia could desperately use this season, but this arrest could have an impact on his availability this year.
Kirby Smart has set a precedent that these driving related incidents won't keep players off the field. But when incidents extend beyond that Smart has suspended players if necessary. This most recently occurred during the 2024 season when wide receiver Colbie Young was suspended after being arrested for a domestic incident.
It's far too early to know what Smart will do with Riddle, but since his arrest extends beyond a driving incident there is a chance it could impact his season. This happening during the offseason could benefit him though because his case could be resolved before the season begins.
It's likely just a matter of time until Smart comments on this incident and at that point fans will know if he is in jeopardy of missing any time this season.
