After a lengthy weather delay Friday night and an early Saturday morning, Georgia has finally wrapped up their first NCAA Tournament game. The Bulldogs faced 4-seed Long Island in a game that was never really a game as Georgia jumped out to a big lead and never looked back en route to an 18-2 victory.

Georgia has been a home run machine all season, and that continued against Long Island. The Bulldogs smashed a whopping nine home runs in this game which tied the NCAA Tournament single game record.

Wining their first game is a really big deal, and setting this NCAA Tournament record makes it even more special. But the question has to be asked, was this record worth it if it meant having to deal with a significant disadvantage the rest of the weekend?

Georgia’s NCAA Tournament record may not have been worth it

Georgia already had really good odds of winning the NCAA Tournament before regional play began. They had the fourth-best odds according to FanDuel Sportsbook which implies they should have no issues advancing out of the Athens Regional this weekend.

Unfortunately this weather delay will make life much more difficult for them to advance.

Georgia will face 3-seed Liberty at 5:00 pm EST later on Saturday with the winner taking complete control of the Athens Regional. The loser however will have to win three straight games to advance to the Super Regional.

The fact Georgia had to get to the ballpark early Saturday morning to finish their first game at 9:00 am gives Liberty a distinct advantage. After they upset 2-seed Boston College on Friday they got to head back to their hotel to rest and begin their preparations for today’s game. Georgia however had to stay at the ballpark late Friday night only to arrive early Saturday morning needing to finish their game with Long Island first even though the result was already known.

So was this NCAA Tournament record worth it? It will be if Georgia advances to the Super Regional, but if they fall short at any point, especially against Liberty on Saturday, then this record will not be worth it.

The NCAA unfortunately had to see Georgia’s game with Long Island finish, and now that it’s complete Georgia has to get ready for the biggest game of their season in just a few short hours.

Georgia will take on 3-seed Liberty on Saturday at 5:00 pm EST.
