Georgia football entered their week 12 matchup against Texas in a very familiar spot. The Bulldogs are 8-1 and the No. 5 team in the country with all of their goals still in front of them.
However, Georgia does need a little help in order to accomplish their goal of winning an SEC Championship.
Entering week 12 both Texas A&M and Alabama were still undefeated in conference play. Since they don't play each other this year there was a world where they both went 8-0 and played for an SEC title in Atlanta. So in order for Georgia to play for an SEC Championship this season instead they needed some help.
And it looked like South Carolina was going to give them the help they needed against Texas A&M as they led the Aggies 30-3 at halftime. But the Gamecocks couldn't hold on and Texas A&M stormed back and won 31-30.
Georgia never should have trusted South Carolina to beat Texas A&M
It was never a realistic outcome for Georgia to pass Alabama in the SEC standings. Georgia would have needed the Crimson Tide to lose their final two conference games this season against Oklahoma and Auburn, and seeing how great Alabama has been playing shows how unlikely that was to occur.
But passing Texas A&M was a lot more realistic because Georgia just needed the Aggies to lose one game. Everyone thought the best chance of that happening was against Texas in their season finale, but 1-6 South Carolina had a chance to pull off the upset for Georgia. But they unfortunately could not win after leading by 27 points at halftime.
Texas A&M's loss would have moved them into a four way tie with Texas, Georgia and Ole Miss with one conference loss. Then a Georgia win over Texas Saturday night would have clinched the Bulldogs spot in the SEC Championship game.
It is a very obscure rule that would have sent Georgia to Atlanta, but the tiebreaker that would have sent Georgia to the SEC Championship game is opponents winning percentage. This looks at which team played the more difficult SEC schedule this season, and when comparing these three teams it is Georgia who played the toughest schedule.
But that rule no longer matters after Texas A&M's comeback win. Georgia does have some hope still if they beat Texas on Saturday because the Aggiest could still lose to the Longhorns in their season finale in two weeks. At this point that is Georgia's only hope to make it to the SEC Championship game, so things aren't looking so great for UGA right now.
