Georgia football is entering their final SEC game of the season against Texas with a 6-1 record in conference play. With a win they will finish at 7-1 in SEC play which typically is good enough to make it to Atlanta to play for an SEC Championship, but as of today that is not the case.

There is however an obscure tiebreaker rule that could see Georgia make it to Atlanta if they get a little more help by the end of the season.

Strange tiebreaker procedure could send Georgia to the SEC Championship game

Georgia still trails Alabama and Texas A&M in the SEC standings who are both still undfeated. Since the Crimson Tide have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Georgia the Bulldogs would need Alabama to lose twice to pass them in the standings. That more than likely will not happen, so all eyes in Athens are now looking at Texas A&M.

The Aggies have benefitted from one of the easiest SEC schedules in the history of the conference, but there is still hope that they will lose one game before the end of the season. Texas A&M hosts South Carolina this weekend which should be an easy win, but their season finale is at Texas which could be where they finally drop a game. And that is exactly what Georgia needs to happen to make it to Atlanta.

Assuming Texas A&M loses that game, that would leave the Aggies, Georgia and Ole Miss all sitting at 7-1 with one spot in Atlanta up for grabs. Since it is a three-way tie and all three teams didn't play each other this year, the tiebreaker the SEC would use to break this tie would go to the record of their conference opponents this season. This means that whichever team played the most difficult schedule in the SEC this year would make it to Atlanta, and Georgia would be that team.

Georgia still needs to handle their business against Texas this weekend then hope the Longhorns beat the Aggies in the final week of the regular season, but if those two outcomes occur UGA will make it back to Atlanta to defend their SEC Championship crown against Alabama.
