Georgia football’s season was on the line Saturday night when they took on Ole Miss. A loss would all but end their chances at making the SEC Championship game, which at a school like Georgia would be a complete failure. Thankfully the Bulldogs were able to beat Ole Miss to keep their hopes of repeating as SEC Champions alive.
Ole Miss was undefeated in SEC play before this loss, so most would assume that this win would put Georgia in the drivers seat to make it to the SEC Championship game. That however is not the case because the Bulldogs still need some outside help just to make it to Atlanta.
Georgia needs more help just to make the SEC Championship game
If the season were to end today, Georgia would not be one of the two teams that would be playing for an SEC Championship. Alabama and Texas A&M are the two teams still undefeated in conference play, so they would get the nod over UGA.
The bad news for Georgia is that the Crimson Tide and Aggies do not play each other this season, so a scenario exists where they both win out and make the title game over Georgia no matter what UGA does the rest of the season. On top of that, Georgia would need Alabama to lose twice before jumping them in the standings because of the head to head win the Crimson Tide earned earlier this season.
So the only way Georgia will make the SEC Championship game is if Texas A&M loses one game or Alabama loses twice. Considering how great Alabama looks right now, the Crimson Tide losing twice seems unrealistic, so Georgia needs A&M to lose once if they want to make it to Atlanta. Thankfully the Aggies have a few tough games left on their schedule including LSU, Missouri and Texas.
Texas A&M could lose either of those games, but they could also run the table as well. So all Georgia can do now is win their final three SEC games and hope that the Aggies fall short in one of their games which would allow Georgia to have a potential rematch against Alabama in Atlanta.
