Georgia originally opened as a 2.5 point favorite at Alabama this weekend early Sunday morning. Since then this spread has bounced around faster than anyone can keep track of, but it seems to have finally settled on Alabama being the favorite instead of Georgia.
It isn't weird when a spread changes by a few points from where it was originally set, but it is uncommon for the team originally tabbed as the favorite to end up being the underdog. Georgia however currently is an underdog to Alabama even though they began the week as the favorite.
What is the spread in Georgia's upcoming matchup vs Alabama?
Alabama is currently favored by 1.5 points, according to DrafktKings Sportsbook. The spread has officially moved four points from where it was originally set which is already quite the jump, but the fact that the spread now favors Alabama is what is strange.
This isn't the strangest thing that has happened though because this spread has been constantly on the move for the last 24 hours. The spread didn't just jump from favoring Georgia to Alabama one time, it's been jumping back and forth like a game of tennis for the last 24 hours quite consistently.
This spread appears to have finally settled on Alabama being the favorite, and since these teams are relatively even on paper it makes sense that the home team would have the slight edge.
Vegas can't decide who the favorite should be
Georgia and Alabama have both been equally impressive so far this season, but they have looked good in different ways. The Bulldogs have been blowing out every team they've faced this season which includes beating Vanderbilt by 24 points this past weekend. This was the closest margin of victory they've experienced all season, so Georgia is yet to play a close game this year.
Alabama on the other hand has played a couple close games. The Crimson Tide were unable to pull away from an average Florida State team who they only beat by 14 points. They also played Kentucky relatively close even though the final score says otherwise. That Kentucky team though is ranked now and they just dominated previously undefeated Mississippi State on the road this weekend, so the Tide have beaten better teams than Georgia so far this season.
On paper these team are similar as well. They have the top two scoring offenses in the country and have two of the most talented rosters in all of college football as well. They also have loads of experience winning big games, so both teams should be ready for as big of a moment as this game will be.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter who the favorite is. No one should be able to deny that both teams could realistically win this game, and as long as that is the case and the spread is only a couple points whoever Vegas thinks will win ultimately means nothing.
Game odds adjust periodically and are subject to change.
