Wednesday night the first injury report for Georgia's matchup against Vanderbilt this weekend came out, and Commodores starting quarterback Jared Curtis was listed as questionable to play. He is Vanderbilt's best player by far, so after seeing this unexpected news Vegas oddsmakers immediately adjusted the spread for this game.
Georgia has been favored by 24.5 points since this line opened earlier this week, but after Curtis was included on Vanderbilt's injury report it already jumped a full point to 25.5 points, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. This may not seem like that big of a jump, but it confirms the thought process that Vanderbilt stands much less of a chance at winning this game without their star quarterback.
Georgia vs Vanderbilt just got easier for UGA
Any game would get easier for Georgia to win if their opponent was missing their starting quarterback. Curtis however isn't just any quarterback though as he was a five-star recruit out of high school and the No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 class.
Through two starts he has lived up to the hype that comes with being the No. 1 quarterback in a recruiting class. In his first start against NC State two weeks ago he threw for three touchdowns and 277 yards while also adding 64 yards on the ground as well. Then last week he nearly won his first career road start at Auburn.
He is talented enough where he could carry Vanderbilt on his back in any game. Curtis would be a significant challenge for Georgia's defense who hasn't been truly challenged by anyone yet this season, so if he doesn't play it's easy to see why UGA would stand a better chance at winning this game. That's why Vegas already shifted the spread in Georgia's favor by a whole point after the news broke that Curtis could miss Saturday's game.
Georgia doesn't need to face Vanderbilt without Jared Curtis
Georgia in theory should be happy to take any advantage they can get, but in this instance they might be better off with Curtis playing. As mentioned, Curtis would likely be one of the most talented quarterbacks Georgia would face all season, so if they were already favored by 24.5 points before he found himself on Vanderbilt's injury report then they shouldn't need him to sit in order for them to win.
Georgia will eventually play a great team this year with a quarterback just as talented as Curtis. Vanderbilt doesn't have the talent around Curtis that they need to truly complete against Georgia though, so for UGA they might be better off playing him to better prepare them to play teams with a great quarterback and a good roster.
Just look at teams like Alabama and Ole Miss who Georgia plays on the road this season. They have extremely talented quarterbacks just like Curtis in Keelon Russell and Trinidad Chambliss, but the difference is they have immense talent surrounding them as well. Vanderbilt doesn't have the same talent to be a true threat to beat Georgia, but they have an elite quarterback who would challenge Georgia.
So to better prepare themselves for future tests like Alabama and Ole Miss, facing Curtis would actually be in their best interest.
Vanderbilt and Georgia will release updated injury reports on Thursday and Friday, so it will be interesting to see if Curtis remains questionable to play or if his status will change at all. Georgia would stand a better chance at winning this game with him on the sideline, but they might be better off in the long run if he plays.
Game odds adjust periodically and are subject to change.
