LSU is caught in the crosshairs of the SEC. They seemingly escaped punishment last week when a Louisiana court ruled in their favor to allow former NFL players to return to college football. LSU ultimately decided against adding these players (for now), but the damage was already done in the eyes of the SEC.
On Tuesday the conference filed an amended complaint against LSU to allow them to kick the Tigers out of the conference. It requires a two-thirds vote from the SEC presidents to expel LSU from the conference, and that vote is expected to be held on Thursday.
This amended complaint from the SEC is a result of comments made by Lane Kiffin during the Tigers’ win over Clemson this weekend. Before halftime he commented on live TV, “Imagine if we had pro players” and continued to talk about this issue in his postgame press conference as well.
The SEC has officially had enough, and they are debating kicking LSU out of the conference due to “lack of institutional control.”
”The SEC alleges that Kiffin's statements ‘stand in sharp contrast to the silence by the President and Athletic Director of LSU’ and that ‘they confirm the lack of institutional control over the athletics program at LSU that is required by Article 6 of the SEC Constitution and by the remaining provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws,’” Pete Thamel reported for ESPN.
LSU should’ve listened to the countless warnings they received
Georgia, the rest of the SEC and the college football world tried to warn LSU. They’ve attempted to explain just how much they disagree with allowing former NFL players to come back to college, but no one at LSU cared to listen. Even Kirby Smart has made it clear that he disagrees with with Lane Kiffin and LSU, but even he hasn’t been able to change their minds.
Kiffin and LSU think they’re better than everyone else. In a world full of players running to courts to gain another year of eligibility LSU thought they could do the same and take advantage of the system that’s been in place for over a century. The SEC however is putting their foot down, and now it could be up to the rest of the conference to kick them out.
It seems unlikely that LSU will be removed from the conference, but the SEC is taking a firm stance against what they’re doing. Maybe this will be enough to finally get LSU to calm down, but with Kiffin you never know what he could do next.
