Gunner Stockton has been one of the biggest reasons why Georgia has had such a great season this year. There weren't many people throughout the country who thought he was capable of being a great quarterback this season, but for most of the year he has proven everyone wrong and turned himself into a fringe Heisman Trophy candidate.
Friday night against Georgia Tech however was not his best night. And his performance was a tough reminder for Georgia fans that while he is capable of being UGA's biggest weapon, he can also be their kryptonite as well.
Gunner Stockton could be Georgia's eventual downfall
Georgia earned a 19-6 victory over Georgia Tech Friday night, but Stockton is the last person who deserves any praise for that. He finished the game completing 11 of 21 passes for 70 yards, one touchdown and one interception. That is not the Stockton anyone is used to seeing this season, and his poor performance came at the worst possible time because postseason play is about to begin.
The good news for Georgia is that Stockton's bad game came when Georgia's defense was at their best. It also came when Georgia's run game had a really good night as well. So thankfully the rest of the team had his back, but he can't afford to have a night like this again once the College Football Playoff begins.
But knowing how great Stockton has been it's unlikely that this poor play will continue. He has had far more impressive performances than bad games, so it's likely Friday night was just an outlier.
But Georgia fans better hope that is the case, because one more bad game from Stockton could end Georgia's season.
