The biggest test of the season is quickly approaching as Georgia heads to Alabama this weekend. This will be a huge challenge for the entire team, but Gunner Stockton specifically will face pressure unlike anything he has experienced this season.
Through five games Georgia has only faced one good defense. That team was Oklahoma whose offense had struggled all season, so there wasn’t a ton of pressure on Stockton to have to outscore his opponent.
Stockton will have to be near perfect Saturday at Alabama because not only do they have a talented defense but they have an offense capable of putting up a lot of points. Georgia has only scored nine more points than Alabama this season, so these two teams are essentially even when it comes to how great their offenses have been this year.
Gunner Stockton has to be ready for a shootout
Stockton will have loads of pressure to score a lot of points this weekend because there’s a chance Alabama could put a big number on the scoreboard. No team Georgia has faced this season has had a good offense, so up to this point Stockton could just focus on running the offense as good as he can. Now he has to worry about how many points he actually needs to score to win because Alabama could run the score up themselves.
Georgia has the No. 1 scoring offense in the country so far this season, but scoring a lot in Tuscaloosa will be a challenge. Alabama on the other hand has the No. 2 scoring offense just behind them, so Stockton could struggle to keep up if their offense gets rolling.
The good news for Georgia is that they have a much better scoring defense. They are No. 12 in the country after giving up just 13.4 points per game. Alabama is ranked No. 51 after allowing almost 21 points per game. That could be the difference in this game, but it doesn’t eliminate the added pressure that Stockton will face throughout this game to have to score as much as he can.
Significant weather could impact Georgia’s offense
The weather could play a big role when Georgia and Alabama take the field. A big storm is currently forming in the Gulf of Mexico and it’s projected path is headed right for Alabama.
This storm is expected at minimum to bring a lot of rain this weekend, and that would make scoring a lot of points more difficult for both teams. Since Georgia’s defense has been better this year that could favor them, but anything is possible in bad weather games.
There is a chance this storm turns into a hurricane as well. If that happens then who knows if this game will even be played, but at this point Georgia needs to prepare for a game in crazy elements.
Beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa will be tough rain or shine. Maybe the bad weather favors Georgia in the long run, but either way there will be a lot of pressure on Stockton for him to lead Georgia to their first marquee victory of the season.
