Georgia football's season opener is finally here. The Bulldogs are set to take on Marshall Saturday, Aug. 30 to kick off their season as they attempt to repeat as SEC Champions.
Georgia has done an excellent job at staying healthy this offseason, especially during fall camp when injuries can creep up on anyone. But punter Brett Thorson is still recovering from an injury he suffered during the SEC Championship game against Texas, and his status heading into Saturday's game is still unknown.
Is Brett Thorson available vs Marshall?
As mentioned, Thorson suffered a nasty knee injury during Georgia's SEC Championship win over Texas last season. While that injury is almost nine months old at this point, it was significant enough to still be impacting him as Georgia is heading into their season opener.
Thorson has been sidelined all offseason, and he hasn't been able to kick again until the last few weeks. But the fact that he has been kicking for a few weeks now is a very good sign. However, Kirby Smart has shared a few times throughout the last few weeks that Thorson was not kicking during live practice sessions, which is something he would need to do before he can play in a real game.
Thankfully the last update Georgia received about Thorson earlier this week from Smart indicated that Thorson has been kicking during live practice throughout this past week. Smart did say he still was uncertain if Thorson will play against Marshall, but this was a big step in the right direction.
Fast forward to Saturday afternoon when Georgia released their depth chart for Saturday's game, and Thorson was listed as the starter at punter. So Georgia fans won't have to wait much longer to see their preseason first team All-American take the field.
