One of the biggest games in the SEC this week sees No. 1 Texas hit the road to take on No. 14 Tennessee. This battle of undefeated teams will have a huge impact on the race to win the SEC, so that alone is a good enough reason for Georgia fans to be watching closely.
While watching it may not be a bad idea to cheer for Tennessee even if they are a team many Georgia fans despise because a Tennessee victory could make Georgia the No. 1 team in the country next week.
The AP Poll’s No. 1 ranking is within Georgia’s reach
Georgia enters this week 3-0 after three blowout wins to start the season. They are the No. 2 team in the country as well with hopes of being the No. 1 team at the end of this season. That is the ultimate goal, but there's nothing wrong with becoming the No. 1 team sooner if possible.
Texas is the only team standing in Georgia's way. The Longhorns jumped Georgia in the rankings after they beat previously No. 1 Ohio State two weeks ago. They more than deserved having the top spot over Georgia who still hasn't played a good opponent yet, but all it takes is one loss from Texas for Georgia to more than likely take over the top spot.
This week Texas plays at Tennessee who is more than capable of defeating the Longhorns. Texas is favored by Vegas to win this game, but they are only predicted to win by 4.5 points so Vegas thinks an upset is possible.
Georgia has to get past Oklahoma this weekend to claim the No. 1 ranking if Texas were to lose, but Tennessee beating the Longhorns is an outcome Georgia fans should welcome.
Tennessee can be a difficult team to cheer for
Georgia and Tennessee have a long history of playing each other every season. This year however is the first season they won't play since 1991, but all of those games have made the two programs and their fans hate it each other. Tennessee isn't a traditional rival for Georgia, but sometimes it can feel like it.
Georgia currently holds a nine game win streak over Tennessee. Even after all these recent victories Tennessee fans still acted like they were on Georgia's level each year which got rather annoying, but every year Kirby Smart reminded them that they have work to do.
This hatred that's boiled for so many years can make it difficult to ever cheer for Tennessee, but if there was any week to hope they win it is this week.
Texas has arguably the most difficult schedule in the country even after the Tennessee game. In their final eight games of the season they play six teams that are currently ranked, so even if Texas does beat Tennessee there are still many more realistic opportunities where they could lose a game.
All Georgia can do is focus on themselves and keep winning every game in front of them, but a Tennessee win this weekend would be fun to see as it could give Georgia the No. 1 ranking by this time next week.
