Gunner Stockton is not your typical quarterback build. He is not the 6'5" guy that has a cannon for an arm. However, that should not discredit the consistency he has shown on the football field.
Joel Klatt's top 10 QB rankings did just that.
His rankings included transfers on brand new teams and young guys who even though are unproven, fit that perfect QB mold. This is not the first time the Georgia Bulldogs or one of their players has been discredited, but you would not imagine it to come from Klatt.
Gunner Stockton snubbed on Joel Klatt's QB rankings
For a first year starter, things could not have gone much better for Stockton. The redshirt junior quarterback led the Bulldogs to their second straight SEC Championship and were a few plays short of beating Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. If they were to come out on top and make a few more stops in that game, there is no telling how far they would have gone after.
Stockton was not just a contributor in those wins either. In fact, in several games he was the reason they won. Stockton threw a perfect touchdown pass in the back corner of the endzone against Tennessee on a fourth down in the fourth quarter in what would eventually be an overtime win for the Bulldogs.
He also had other magnificent moments that catapulted the Dawgs to wins in the regular season against Ole Miss, Texas, and many others as well. The way he was able to be a threat in the air and on the ground terrorized defenses. Stockton even became the first Georgia quarterback since Fran Tarkenton to lead the Bulldogs in rushing touchdowns in the regular season.
Despite all of those accomplishments, Klatt put CJ Carr in the top five on his list. A guy who in 2025, on a weaker schedule, had fewer passing yards, more interceptions, and over 400 fewer rushing yards. Why? It doesn't make any sense other than outside hype on consistently overrated programs.
Numbers 7-10 on his list all included transfer quarterbacks who are coming into vastly different offenses and schemes than their previous school. All of their previous numbers also coming from weaker competition.
What should you value more, Stockton carrying the Dawgs over CFP teams or Darian Mensah who had less than 250 passing yards and two interceptions in a loss against UConn? For Klatt, it is the latter just because he had higher passing yards on double the amount of passing attempts against some FCS teams. For us, we choose the one who is battle tested and proven.
