Wednesday night Alabama announced that they were extending head coach Kalen DeBoer's contract. They extended him for seven years and will be paying him a whopping $12.5 million per year.
How does that compare to Kirby Smart? Georgia pays Smart $13 million per year, so they essentially make the same amount of money now. But that in itself doesn't make much sense because Smart and DeBoer are not comparable when it comes to the amount of success they have had during their careers.
Kalen DeBoer got Kirby-level money that he doesn't deserve
Wouldn't we all love to be one of the highest earners in our industry without being one of the top performers? That is the reality that DeBoer now finds himself in as he became the third highest paid coach in college football Wednesday night.
DeBoer now only makes $500,000 less than Smart each year, so surely their resumes are comparable right? Wrong. In fact, Deboer's resume isn't even close to stacking up to Smart's.
During Smart's 10 years as a head coach he has already won the SEC four times. He also has two National Championships to his name and has sent more players to the NFL than any other school.
The best thing on DeBoer's resume however is a first round playoff victory against Oklahoma last season. The second best thing is his 2-1 record against Georgia.
Those are good things to have on your resume, but if they are the two best things he has done is anyone sure he deserves to be paid this much?
Alabama has made their bed and now they have to sleep in it. DeBoer does not strike fear into anyone, so this announcement brought a lot of excitement to everyone else in the SEC.
DeBoer is here to stay, and while he should be able to have good teams at Alabama every year the Crimson Tide no longer feel like a threat to win anything worthwhile.
