There is a new thought process growing throughout Georgia's fanbase that they would be better off missing the SEC Championship game altogether. Fans believe that this would give UGA extra time to rest and prepare for the College Football Playoff instead of risking injury in a game they don't need to win to make it into the CFP.
Kirby Smart was asked what he thinks about this on Monday, and he is completely against it.
"I want to win every game that we possibly play," Smart said via 247sports.com. "So what does that mean? Again, my objective is to win every game that we play, so where does that put us? That puts us in that game. So there would be no way I would ever look at not playing in that game. Can't do that. You've gotta look at the opportunity to go play and win a conference championship that has eluded more programs and has been as rare to win, in some cases, as a national championship."
Kirby Smart disagrees with new Georgia fan conspiracy
If the ultimate goal is to win the National Championship then it does make a little sense to not play in the SEC Championship game if that will improve Georgia's chances to win the CFP. Unlike last year, the top four seeds in the playoff are not guaranteed to conference champions, so Georgia could still earn a first round bye without winning the SEC.
So while it does make sense for Georgia fans to not want to play in the SEC Championship game, Smart does not agree. Winning the SEC is one of Georgia's goals every season, and sometimes it is just as hard to win the conference as it is to win a National Championship. Just look at this season where Georgia could go 11-1 (7-1) and not even make it to the SEC Championship game.
Smart wants to win the SEC because losing it means they lost a game at some point throughout the season, and why would any coach sign up for that?
Georgia would not make the SEC Championship game if the season ended today, but there are a few scenarios that can occur that would send them to Atlanta. So while some fans might be hoping Georgia doesn't make it, Smart is praying that they do get a chance to play for an SEC Championship.
