Kirby Smart is not happy with Georgia fans performance during their win against Marshall last weekend. The student section wasn't full like it typically is and many fans left the stadium long before the game ended.
Georgia fans have a lot of reasons why they didn't show up for this game like they usually do, and it all has to do with their opponent. Marshall is not a big game whatsoever, and the result of the game was already known before the game even began. That is probably what caused the student section to not fill up and what led fans to leave early after Georgia got off to a big lead.
This did not sit well with Smart, and he called out Georgia's fans during his press conference on Tuesday.
"I think it's intrinsic in who you are," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "I think people should love to be at a Georgia home game because there's only so many of them. It's limited opportunities. It's the same thing about our players. We don't incentivize them to run to the ball by saying, 'We'll go up in your NIL if you run to the ball.' You got to do it because you want to be great. You got to do it because you want to be different, and if our fans want be great and different then they'll do it."
Kirby Smart called out Georgia's fans
Georgia fans likely won't be too fond of these comments from Smart, but it's hard to argue against him. Georgia only has seven home games this season, and some years it can be even less than that, so why would fans waste the few opportunities they have to see Georgia play in person?
And to the fans at the game, why leave early if you are already there?
Georgia fans will have their chance to prove Smart wrong this weekend when Austin Peay comes to town, but it more than likely will be a similar performance this week from the fans since Austin Peay is severely overmatched just like Marshall. Thankfully Alabama is the next home game after this weekend, and Georgia fans will surely show up for that game.
But it is kind of a shame that attendance at Georgia games is dependent on who the opponent is.
