All last season Georgia had to keep hearing about Carson Beck. Everyone knew that was going to happen after he transferred to Miami, but that didn’t make it any less annoying to have to constantly hear about him.
Beck and Miami ultimately got the last laugh as they made a run to the National Championship this season. Georgia was never able to accomplish that while Beck was their starter, and Miami head coach Mario Cristobal made sure to remind Kirby Smart about that.
“It’s a great piece there to watch what a player like Carson Beck can do with great coaching,” Cristobal said via dawgnation.com.
Georgia, Kirby Smart just can't avoid Carson Beck
Cristobal and Smart both attended a ceremony Monday night to crown the best freshman defender in all of college football. Both coaches were given an opportunity to speak before the presentation of the award to introduce their player that was up for the award, and it was Smart who kicked things off.
Georgia's Ellis Robinson was nominated for this award which he ultimately ended up winning, but before he was announced as the winner Smart took the stage to introduce him. And during that introduction he opened fired on Cristobal by telling him to stay away from Robinson so he doesn't try to steal him and turn him into a Hurricane.
This was an obvious joke at Cristobal's expense because he is known for using the Transfer Portal more than most coaches. Cristobal knew this was a joke as well, so he fired back by saying Smart was never a good enough coach for Beck.
Smart and Cristobal coached at Alabama under Nick Saban at the same time, so these two are good friends. None of these jokes were meant to be personal, and it's unlikely that either took any offense to them. But from Georgia's perspective it was disappointing to see Beck have so much success with Miami this season, so this joke stung a little because there was a little truth to it.
