One of the hottest debates in all of college football right now is if the College Football Playoff should expand beyond 12 teams. Most fans of the sport are begging for it to stay put at 12, but the powers at be want to make their pockets even deeper by adding more games and teams to the playoff.

A final decision hasn’t been made on the future of the playoff yet, but the future of the SEC Championship game could be at risk if it does expand.

Last week Kirby Smart said he would be in favor of the SEC title game ending if the playoff were to expand beyond 12 teams. This statement was met with a lot of push back, and Smart may have seen that because he is now walking his previous statement back and wants the game to continue regardless of what happens to the playoff.

"I love the game. I think the game is about the footprint of our conference, and it's the greatest football states in the world, and you know there's a lot of passion and energy among those school,” Smart said via x.com.

Kirby Smart changed his mind in a hurry about the future of the SEC Championship game

Smart’s motivation to end the SEC Championship game came from a feeling that there would be too many games if the playoff expanded again. Instead of playing in the title game, he thought it would be better for Georgia and everyone else in the SEC to prepare for the playoff than playing another game before it began.

This isn’t the worst thought process in the world, but there is too much history in the title game to just let it go away. Especially for a program like Georgia who has found more success than almost every other team in this game, doing away with it would only make the sport less exciting.

This decision ultimately isn’t up to Smart. His opinion would certainly hold some weight if the CFP does expand, but for now Smart wants it to stick around no matter what the CFP committee does with the playoff.
