Earlier this week legendary NFL wide receiver Steve Smith took a shot at Gunner Stockton. He was reviewing Dillon Bell’s film ahead of the NFL Draft, and while doing so he said that Stockton was “dog doo-doo.”
Smith had a long career in the NFL and retired with the 8th most receiving yards in league history, so he typically is someone who knows what they’re talking about. But for obvious reasons this statement was met with a lot of pushback from Georgia fans as well as Kirby Smart.
"Do your homework. You know, like, do a little more homework,” Smart said via 247sports.com. “I think if you look at small sections of it, there's things he can do better. You look at the total body of work he has, it's been really good and I think it's only gonna get better with experience. You know, I don't really know Steve Smith personally. I've got nothing to respond to him. I don't really worry about what he says. I worry about do we win football games and do we produce.”
Steve Smith’s embarrassing remarks force Kirby Smart to defend Gunner Stockton
The quarterback at Georgia will always be under a microscope by the media. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing if the feedback is constructive, but Smith’s take is the complete opposite of helpful.
It comes off as extremely uninformed and frankly a bit embarrassing, so when Smart was asked about his comments he had no choice but to defend his quarterback.
It’s important to note that Stockton does have a lot to improve on. He knows this and Smart has made sure to express that throughout the spring as well. But statements like this do nothing other than embarrass himself for being ignorant.
Stockton now has a chance to prove Smith wrong. If he can go out this fall and play extremely well, contend for the Heisman Trophy and win a national title then people like Smith won’t be able to do anything other than sing his praises.
But as Smart said, Smith should do some homework before he embarrasses himself any further.
