Georgia football is about one week into fall camp, but one transfer is yet to be seen during practice. Illinois transfer running back Josh McCray was nowhere to be seen during the Bulldogs first practice last Thursday, and no update about his status was shared at the time either.
There was no real reason to be worried about his status on the team, but there was significant concerns surrounding if McCray was working through an injury or not. Thankfully Kirby Smart just provided a key update on McCray's status that should end any concern Georgia fans may have had about him.
“He’s (McCray) good. He’s been sick. He’s been under the weather. I think he’s gonna be fine," Smart shared via si.com. "Hopefully with the weather conditions, we outta be able to get him back out there faster.”
Georgia transfer Josh McCray is dealing with an illness
According to Smart, McCray has missed much of fall camp so far because he has been dealing with an illness. While it is unfortunate to see McCray miss time this fall for any reason, missing practice because he is sick is probably the best reason Georgia fans could have hoped for.
Regardless, missing time because of an illness is still bad timing for McCray. If he is unable to practice that means he is likely falling behind when it comes to his conditioning. Conditioning is a key thing for any running back, and if he struggles to stay in shape when he gets back that could impact how much playing time he gets at the start of this season.
At the end of the day though it is great news that McCray isn't injured and is only dealing with an illness. The hope for McCray this season is to be the No. 2 running back behind Nate Frazier, so hopefully he is able to get healthy soon so he can prove why he should be the first backup running back of the bench for Georgia this season.
