This might be the first time all season this coach has received some praise.

Handing out praise after Georgia’s win over Mississippi State is a difficult task because everyone did their job to perfection. But Kirby Smart did his best to shoutout a few individuals during his postgame press conference on Saturday.

One of those who received a lot of praise from Smart is Defensive Coordinator Glenn Schumann. It’s a little surprising seeing him receive public praise because of the countless issues that have plagued Georgia’s defense this year, but he absolutely deserved the praise he received after the stellar performance put on by his defense on Saturday.

"I think Schumann and the defensive staff did an incredible job this game to put a game plan together that our kids could execute," Smart said via 247sports.com. "There was a lot of different things about their offense, and I thought that Schu called a really good game. They're hard to prepare for."

This year has been one to forget for Schumann and the Georgia defense. And it looked like it was going to be much of the same against Mississippi State as they gave up a touchdown on their first drive of the game. But instead of continuing to play bad, Georgia’s defense stepped up and held Mississippi State scoreless throughout UGA’s 38-0 run.

Georgia did give up two late touchdowns, but that was after the outcome was already decided and UGA had taken their foot off the gas.

This performance against Mississippi State has a chance to be a major turning point this season for Georgia’s defense. Will this new found success carry over to the rest of the season even with their schedule getting more difficult again? Or will they go back to their old ways of starting slow?

Georgia fans likely will start calling for Schumann’s job again if they don’t keep this good play up, but for now he deserves a lot of credit for having his defense ready to play. And hopefully he was able to unlock something in Georgia’s defense that they can use to carry them to a deep postseason run this year.
