Kirby Smart discusses how he'll remember this year's senior class
Georgia football has had some special senior classes over the years, especially recently. But the senior class that was celebrated on Saturday during Georgia's win over UMass will go down as the best senior class in Georgia’s history, at least according to the record books.
Saturday's win over UMass moved the senior's overall record at Georgia to 51-4. Those 51 wins surpasses the previous record set by last year's seniors, who ended their Georgia careers with 50 wins.
These sneiors have gotten to see it all at Georgia. They've been a part of two national championships, an SEC championship and the most dominant stretch of football in Georgia history. But their story is not over, and Kirby Smart discussed that during his postgame press conference on Saturday.
"Probably for the ups and downs, and the way they've handled, you know, they were part of two national championships. They're part of an undefeated regular season team that had one loss and didn't get a play for it," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "And then their story's still gonna be written in their last year. And they'll be remembered for being great leaders, and being extremely bought in, and pushing the younger players this year and last year, which is important. But they also learned from a really good group. They had older brothers that were very good leaders."
Their story is far from over
When looking back at the accomplishments from this year's class, the thing that obviously stands out the most are the two national championships. But while these players did play a huge part in those titles, most fans will remember other Georgia classes first as they contributed to those titles more.
But that is where this year's seniors, and this year’s team in general, can create their own legacy. If Georgia is able to win a national championship this season, not only will this class have significantly more wins than last years, but they’ll also have a third national championship to their resume. That likely would be enough to be remembered as the best class in Georgia football history.
Gerogia still needs to win a lot more games this season for those dreams to become a reality, but there’s no denying how exciting it is just for this senior class to have a chance to do just that.
