Kirby Smart shot down the rumor surrounding Nick Saban's potential return to coaching college football. Smart jokingly stated on Tuesday at SEC Media Days that he offered Saban a job, but he later shared that he does not see a world where Saban returns to college football to coach again.
However, Smart did go on to explain that Saban has been helping him and Georgia since he retired from Alabama a little over a year ago.
"He and I still talk and share ideas from time to time about defensive philosophies and the way to do things, and he's still watching tape and very, very involved in football. He loves it," Smart shared via 247sports.com.
Alabama fans will be upset learning that Nick Saban is helping Georgia
It is no secret that Georgia and Alabama are the top dogs in the SEC right now. Even after the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, the Bulldogs and Tide are the two teams that run this conference right now.
This means that even though Georgia and Alabama are not traditional rivalries, it sometimes feels like the hate between these two programs reaches that level.
According to the above quote from Smart however, him and Saban will speak from time to time to discuss certain ideas and strategies when it comes to Georgia's defense. Alabama fans likely will hate hearing this because Georgia is the team they compete with the most in the SEC every season. So why would they want to learn that their former coach is helping UGA even though he just retired from Alabama?
This fact however shouldn't surprise anyone because Smart coached under Saban for nine years at Alabama. So it shouldn't be shocking to learn that the two keep in touch and that Saban would probably love to see Smart continue to succeed at Georgia.
At the end of the day Saban likely would prefer Alabama to have more success than Georgia, but Saban apparently wants to help the Tide's biggest competitor a little as well. And knowing how Saban is the greatest college football coach of all time, Georgia fans should be over the moon that he is willing to help Smart and UGA out in any way.
