Who does not love great offseason content? The Athletic's Ralph Russo provided us with that on a most glorious Friday in very late February. He was tasked with projecting the head coach of every Power Four program in the country, plus Notre Dame. While thankfully Kirby Smart is still running the show in Athens in 2030, Glenn Schumann could be leading his own Power Four program by that time.
Russo has him replacing an increasingly ineffective Shane Beamer over at South Carolina. In a way, South Carolina would be replacing one Smart protege with another. It would be very Will Muschamp of Schumann too to take the incredibly difficult South Carolina job. Beamer has had his moments in Columbia, but his lack of prowess as a former coordinator often puts him behind the eight ball there.
As far as Schumann is concerned, he has proven to be the most frustrating branch that just will not blossom off Smart's coaching tree. He has been with Smart from the beginning in Athens, following Smart from his alma mater of Alabama to Georgia in 2016. Slowly but surely, he has worked his way up to the role of defensive coordinator. He has been paid a boatload of money to not really execute.
The question remains if Schumann would take this job, as well as how soon may he be leaving UGA...
UGA DC Glenn Schumann projected to be leading South Carolina by 2030
Let's be honest with ourselves here. The only two programs Schumann has ever worked at are Georgia, and Alabama before that. Yes, he has two great mentors in Smart and Nick Saban. However, this suggests he is more likely to be a career coordinator than anything. When has he ever shown an inkling for wanting to prove his worth at another spot? He may want to lead UGA or Alabama, but no...
That is why Schumann is probably going to hold out until an SEC job of note becomes available. Unless he really shines in the next year or so as a defensive coordinator, a flawed gig like South Carolina is arguably the best he can do. It would have to take a perfect storm for something like Oklahoma to become available and for him to be the guy, like Dan Lanning landing over at Oregon.
As far as when this could happen, how about as soon as 2027? Beamer is under immense pressure at South Carolina. This projects to be the final year of LaNorris Sellers' college career. He cannot waste it like he did a year ago. If South Carolina has another losing season, it will be time for Beamer to go. If that does manifest, there are few coaching candidates out there who would fit the bill like Schumann.
Unfortunately for Schumann, South Carolina is a program where head coaches' careers go to die.
