And there you have it! Another Georgia legacy player Committing to the G! Early on Saturday morning, 2027 offensive tackle prospect Ty Johnson announced that he was committing to play for the University of Georgia. He had a handful of offers, but any chance to play for his father's alma mater was always preferred. Johnson's father Travis played with Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo in the 1990s.
Since the man never sleeps, Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals was up bright and early with this graphic.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Johnson is a three-star recruit from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He is the No. 11 player from his state, the No. 42 offensive tackle prospect in the country, and the No. 471 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. While he had 23 official offers, Johnson picked Georgia over the likes of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. He is coming to UGA!
Let's unpack why Johnson committing to Georgia is such an important tone-setter for Smart's staff.
Legacy 2027 3-star offensive tackle Ty Johnson commits to Georgia
While it should not matter as much that Johnson's father played alongside Bobo and Smart, the fact that he mentioned players get developed at Georgia does matter a ton. Johnson is only coming to Georgia as a three-star at an unglamorous position. Although Georgia can recruit seemingly any four and five-star prospect it wants, Smart should continue to go after players who really want to be here.
In the day and age of NIL and the transfer portal, players come and go all the time. What has become readily apparent in the era of the 12-team College Football Playoff is that experience wins. Georgia may have earned the No. 3 seed last year as back-to-back SEC Champions, but that was a green, overachieving unit across the board. Teams like Indiana and Miami were dripping with older players.
So what this means for guys like Johnson who are coming in born to play for Georgia, he will have to put in the work to not only prove he is more than a legacy player, but could help set the tone for everyone who is on this roster. It is all about building and sustaining a winning culture. Georgia has a great one, but it must continually work on itself to have an elite one. Smart knows what he is doing...
For now, this latest commitment goes to show Smart is going to be coaching at UGA for a long time.
