Gunner Stockton is the guy for Georgia at quarterback this year. After a phenomenal first year as a starter he is looking to take the next step this offseason to become one of the best quarterbacks in the country this season and lead Georgia to a National Championship.
While Stockton focuses on that, there is a key battle going on behind the scenes that fans got their first look at during G-Day on Saturday. That is the battle to be Stockton's backup.
Ryan Puglisi held that title last season, but Kirby Smart has not guaranteed him that job this year. In fact, Smart has no clue who the leader to be Stockton's backup is right now.
"I don't know that any of the three of them were so consistent to be able to say, well, he's the clear two, or he's the clear this," Smart said via 247sports.com. "It just wasn't that way... But the other three, four guys have done a good job."
Kirby Smart details tight battle at QB that doesn't have a clear answer yet
Every quarterback got a chance to play during G-Day on Saturday. The good news is that each player had moments of brilliance, but they each made some mistakes as well. This makes Smart's job to name a backup nearly impossible because no one has separated themselves from the group yet.
The job more than likely will go to Puglisi simply because he has more experience than every other potential backup. But Smart is giving each quarterback a chance to prove why they deserve it instead of him, so it's just a matter of if they take it or not.
Georgia still has a long offseason in front of them which they can use to figure out who Stockton's backup should be. At this point Smart doesn't have an answer, but that may not be a bad thing because more competition will motivate and push each player even more.
