The College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams just two years ago. Even though this new edition of the playoff is still so new, the CFP committee is already looking to add even more teams.
The debate among college football coaches, analysts and fans has run rampant ever since this idea was first introduced. Kirby Smart has even joined in these discussions at times, but he inadvertantly just made the best argument for why the playoff shouldn't expand.
Kirby Smart would be willing to sacrifice the SEC Championship game if the College Football Playoff expanded
Last week began with Alabama's athletic director saying that he believes the SEC Championship game should end right now. He believes that it is creating too many challenges for those teams in the College Football Playoff, so he would like to see the game end as soon as possible.
Fast forward a couple days and Kirby Smart weighed in on this topic as well. Smart said that he doesn't want the game to end right now, but if the playoff expanded beyond 12 teams then he would like to see it end. His thought process is the exact same as Alabama's athletic director in that they would be cramming too many games into too short amount of time.
Who actually wants that to happen? The SEC Championship game is one of the best games in all of college football ever year, so sacrificing that game should be the last thing on anyone's mind.
So instead of doing away with the SEC title game, college football just shouldn't expand the playoff. 12 teams is more than enough, so instead of adding more teams that don't deserve a chance to play for a national title they should let all the conferences keep their biggest games of the season in tact.
College football has already changed a lot, the last thing it needs is to eliminate games that have been played long before the playoff ever started.
