The SEC Championship game is the single best game in the SEC every year. It regularly puts two of the best teams in the country against each other to battle it out for the conference's crown, and the game never disappoints.
Georgia has dominated the SEC Championship game recently as they have won it three of the last four seasons. They hope to continue that dominance for the foreseeable future, but Alabama is lobbying to put a stop to Georgia's run by ending the championship game altogether.
"I think the ship has sailed," Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne said via cbssports.com. "It's run its course. ... It's a great event. I don't like the idea of it going away, but I think it's reality, with an expanded playoff."Â
Alabama is scared of playing in the SEC Championship game
Why would anyone want the SEC Championship game to end? It's especially strange to hear Alabama's Athletic Director lobby for the game to end because the Crimson Tide have won it more than any other school in SEC history.
Byrne said that he wants it to end because it can create a disadvantage in the College Football Playoff. This rationale does make sense because whoever plays in the title game gets one less week of time off compared to whoever their first round CFP opponent is. Then whoever wins this game will have to wait a month before their quarterfinal CFP matchup, and that has proven to be disastrous for Georgia the last two years.
Even though he may have a good reason for why the game should end, putting a halt to something as historic as this game still doesn't seem right. Sure the SEC could still crown a champion based on the regular season results, but that isn't exciting at all. The SEC Championship game however is as good as it gets, and fans would really miss out on an amazing experience if it ended.
Kirby Smart has said time and time again how much he loves this game. Maybe it's because he wins it so often, but hopefully the conference listens to him over Byrne and lets this game continue like almost everyone wants.
