SEC rule change couldn't keep Georgia out of the SEC Championship game

Two years ago the SEC announced a groundbreaking adjustment to how their conference champion is determined. The SEC Championship game remained in tact, but the east and west divisions that had been around for decades were erased. This meant that Georgia could no longer just dominate the teams in the east division en route to the SEC Championship game.

Many SEC fans felt this would make it more difficult for Georgia to get to Atlanta because the west division has always been more difficult than the east. But even with this big of a change Georgia has still made the SEC Championship game every season.

The SEC can't keep Georgia out of the SEC Championship game

2025 is the second season that the division-less model has been used in the SEC. So instead of the No. 1 team from the east and west divisions meeting in the SEC Championship game the two teams with the best records in the conference make it instead.

Last year Georgia was able to make it at 6-2, and this year they did one better by finishing 7-1. Even though they improved on their record Georgia still needed some help to make it to the SEC Championship game, and Texas gave them that help by beating Texas A&M Friday night.

That result propelled Georgia to Atlanta and helped them earn yet another trip to the title game. And since Texas will not make it back this season, Georgia is the only team that can say they've made the SEC Championship game every year since the SEC changed their model.

The SEC didn't make this change in hopes of keeping Georgia out of Atlanta, but this adjustment did make it more difficult for them. But the increase in difficulty ended up not mattering as Georgia will have a chance to repeat as SEC Champions next weekend.
