There is one big problem that Georgia is facing this season that is preventing them from reaching their full potential. And to every Georgia fan, it may seem extremely obvious.
Georgia so far this season has not been a good first half team. They have had moments, like in their recent game against Kentucky, where they played well to start the game, but that success has not followed them in their matchups against good competition.
Kirby Smart was asked why he thinks that is the case after Georgia’s win over Auburn, and he unfortunately did not have an answer.
"I don't know. I wish I knew. I mean, I would tell you if I did," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "I asked the team that question afterwards. We've got to get it solved because it's hard when you're this style of team to play catch-up. It's not really who we are. But we've got to get better."
Kirby Smart doesn’t know why Georgia struggles in the first half
Georgia has now immediately fallen behind their opponent in their three difficult games this season. This occurred against Auburn on Saturday when the Tigers took a 10-0 lead and it also happened against Alabama and Tennessee who both led Georgia by double digits as well.
The good news is that Georgia went 2-1 in these games even after their dreadful starts, but imagine how much better UGA could be if they started fast. The Bulldogs second half defense has been amazing this season. They held Alabama and Auburn scoreless in the second half, so Georgia would have a chance to be the best team in the country if they found a way to play that well all game long.
Unfortunately it seems like Smart has run out of answers. That is a scary realization because it’s just a matter of time until another team starts fast and makes a Georgia comeback too unrealistic.
The Bulldogs next chance to fix their first half struggles comes against No. 5 Ole Miss this weekend. The Rebels have a high-powered offense capable of dominating Georgia if they continue to struggle, but if UGA can start fast on Saturday then they should have no issues winning this game.
