Kirby Smart must slam the door shut with 5-star DL after Ohio State left it wide open

One of the biggest visitors on Georgia's campus last weekend was five-star defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou. As the No. 32 overall recruit in the country he is someone that every program could desperately use, and Kirby Smart is doing everything he can to earn his commitment.

Fakatou just wrapped up an interesting stretch in his recruitment as he officially visited Ohio State on May 29 which he followed up with an official visit to Georgia on May 31. It is very rare for official visits to line up that closely, and that could prove very costly to the Buckeyes.

Kirby Smart must take advantage of Ohio State's failure to get a commitment from Marcus Fakatou

Heading into these official visits it was Ohio State who was the leader in Fakatou's recruitment. In fact, they had multiple predictions already placed in their favor to come out on top.

The Buckeyes however did not do enough during their visit to earn a commitment, and that could prove costly.

So many recruits across the country this year are immediately committing after they take a visit to a school. They are doing so even if they have other visits lined up as well. Fakatou however was not willing to commit to Ohio State after his visit with the Buckeyes, so that opened the door wide open for Smart and Georgia.

Word out of Athens is that his visit to Georgia went extremely well. He however has not committed to Georgia either and those predictions are still in favor of the Buckeyes too. It is a really good sign for Georgia that he didn't commit to Ohio State during his visit, but alternatively it is becoming a problem that he hasn't committed to Georgia either.

Georgia must act fast before more programs get their shot at Marcus Fakatou

Every day that passes is one day closer for Georgia to be sitting in purgatory just like Ohio State. If a recruit doesn't commit within a few days after visiting Georgia then it isn't clear if they ever will. Fakatou's visit has been done for a few days now already, so it is looking like a commitment won't be coming in Georgia's favor right now.

Fakatou does have a few more visits coming up soon and the hope going into his visit was that he'd pull the trigger before then. But at this point it looks like those visits are going to occur and both Georgia and Ohio State are going to have to sweat them out.

Fakatou will visit Oregon on June 12. Then just like he did after visiting Ohio State he will make a trip to Notre Dame just a few days later on June 15. That will wrap up all of his scheduled visits and at that point he will most likely commit.

Georgia has felt like a distant team in his recruitment up to this point. The only time it felt like he could ever commit to Georgia is if he did so immediately after his visit to Athens because it went so well.

Unfortunately that has not happened, so Georgia might be fighting a losing battle right now. Georgia should never be counted out though because anything is possible with Smart.
