Crushing update shows Georgia needs a Hail Mary with 5-star DL

Georgia is quickly falling behind for one of the best defensive lineman in the country.

Kirby Smart still has a ton of work to do to fix Georgia's 2027 recruiting class. The Bulldogs only have seven commits and are ranked outside the top 30 in the country, but there is still plenty of time for Smart to make his move this summer.

June usually is a massive month for Georgia as last year alone saw them add close to 20 commits. The hope is that Smart will be able to pull that off again and get Georgia's recruiting class much higher in the rankings where they belong.

The easiest way to do that is by adding more five-star players to their recruiting class, but unfortunately a crushing update was shared in Marcus Fakatou's recruitment that puts Georgia far behind Ohio State in his recruitment.

Georgia needs a stroke of luck to land 5-star Marcus Fakatou

Fakatou is a five-star defensive lineman from the state California. Winning a recruitment from a Cali kid is always tough, but Georgia is one of the programs big enough to regularly pull it off.

Unfortunately a new prediction was logged in his recruitment in favor of Ohio State which shows just how much work Smart still has to do to win this recruitment.

There is some good news for Georgia though and that is that Fakatou doesn't have a scheduled commitment date yet. He also will officially visit Georgia on June 1, so Smart will have a chance to make his move then.

But it's apparently going to take a Hail Mary from Smart to pull this off, but if anyone can pull that off it is Smart so who knows what will happen.

Kirby Smart has to answer the tough questions if Georgia can keep recruiting against the big dogs

Smart has to find a solution to win some more of these recruitments because so far in the 2027 class he has been struggling.

Five-star Donte Wright flipping to Miami is the one loss that stands out the most, but fellow five-star Mark Matthews embarrassing Georgia while committing to Texas A&M was tough to experience as well. It hasn't been all bad for Georgia though, but overall it hasn't been good enough this year.

Smart is now left with one question that he needs to answer. When will he adjust his stance on NIL?

Georgia fans love to praise him for his refusal to overpay for top recruits, but at some point that strategy may no longer work. And if it's clear that it's not working then it would be crazy for him to not change. So if Georgia keeps losing these recruitments then it's just a matter of time until they aren't a championship caliber team anymore.

The thought of that is the worst thing imaginable.

The good news for Georgia and Smart is that they still are a championship level team, so he has time to adjust. But it doesn't seem likely that he will and that is a major concern as time goes on.
