Kirby Smart hasn't made too many mistakes throughout his career at Georgia. But when he does make a mistake he almost always own up to it.

That is what he did recently when he proclaimed to the world one of his biggest recruiting blunders from his tenure as Georgia's head coach.

Kirby Smart owns up to big recruiting mistake

Georgia made a big splash in the Transfer Portal this offseason when they added wide receiver Isiah Canion. Canion spent the last two seasons at rival Georgia Tech where he quickly blossomed into one of the top wide receivers in the ACC.

He is originally from the state of Georgia, so it was a bit strange for Georgia fans to see an in-state player thrive at Georgia Tech. It isn't often that recruits choose the Yellow Jackets over Georgia, so what went wrong here?

The problem was that Georgia never even recruited Canion out of high school. He wasn't ranked that high coming out of high school, but that isn't an exuse. He is someone that Georgia likely still should've indentified as someone they needed to bring to Athens. And that failure in identifying the talent he possessed is one of the biggest recruiting mistakes Smart thinks he has ever made on the recruiting trail.

So while Georgia Tech got to enjoy him the last two years, he is now heading to Georgia where he will spend his final two years of college football. Georgia lost a lot of production this offseason from their wide receiver room, so Canion will be expected to come in and make an immediate impact.

But he is fresh off a very good season at Georgia Tech and will undoubtedly be able to come in and become one of the leaders of UGA's wide receiver room.
